Shane Andersen (1949-2023)

Rev. Shane Andersen was born in Bath, UK, in 1949. His mother was a Salvationist, and he attributes his Christian faith to having been 'dedicated' to God as an infant by Col. Hamilton under the Salvation Army flag.

He arrived in Australia in 1959 as a 'Ten Pound Pom', and the Salvation Army was instrumental in assisting his family in settling in Nundah, QLD. While studying for the Salvation Army ministry, Shane came out as gay. And even though he was rejected by his Church, God had another plan for him.

This began with Cross Section in Brisbane, followed by Christ's Community Church and the Metropolitan Community Church. After moving to Sydney in 1975, Shane established Gayline, a telephone counselling service. As a 78-er, Shane was also involved in early protests and with PFLAG.
