Johnny Allen

Johnny Allen grew up in Manly. He was influenced by the bohemian arts scene in Kings Cross and artists from the US from an early age, and in the 1970s began working in indi music venues like The Arts Factory in Surry Hills, and organising festivals like the Nimbin Aquarius Festival. After spending a year in the US, Allen retuned to Sydney and built up a gay film festival. In this interview, he talks about 1970s gay culture, his involvement in theatre, and alternative events organising.
