Ron Quilter (1930-2013)

Ron Quilter was a member of Temple Emanuel, a founder of Dayenu (a Sydney-based Jewish LGBTIQA+ group) and a pioneer for the recognition of gay and lesbian rights in Australia. The great relationship of his life was with Cammie (Cameron), one of the greatest drag artists of the late 60s.

Quilter grew up in Bondi, and after spending his early 20s in London, returned to Sydney to attend the Rathbone School of Dramatic Art run by Miss Judy Rathbone-Lawless and Miss Winifred Healey. He acted in radio serials and was a strong supporter of the ballet.

Ron was president of the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation in the late 1980s and was involved in many charitable and community groups. In 1999 he received a Commonwealth Recognition Award for Senior Australians for contributions to the gay and lesbian community. He also worked with ACON, the Positive Living Centre and the Asylum Seekers Centre.
