Frank Howarth (1951-)

Frank Howarth grew up in Sydney and became involved in the gay scene through social events at 33A Glebe Point Road. In this interview, Frank remembers the social scene of the 1970s in Oxford Street. He was heavily involved with the Gay and Lesbian Counselling Service, from manning the phones to the role of President. He marched in the 1978 First Mardi Gras and shares his memories of the events of that evening. He shares memories of Fitness Exchange and Sydney Spokes as both social and fitness networks, through which he took part in the Gay Games in Vancouver and Sydney, as competitor and then organiser. Frank cared for friends during the AIDS/HIV crisis. He spent his career in the public service and speaks about his many different roles and being out at work.
