Watters, Frank

Frank Watters (1934-2020)

Frank Watters grew up in Muswellbrook in the upper Hunter region of NSW. His first job, after leaving school at 15, was in the local coal mine. His passion for art began from an early age and he would regularly travel to Sydney to visit the Macquarie Galleries. When he eventually moved to Sydney, he worked at the Barry Stern Gallery, and there he met next door neighbours Geoffrey Legge and Alex Challen. In this interview, Frank recounts his lifelong relationship with Geoffrey and Alex, with whom he established the Watters Gallery in Liverpool Street, Darlinghurst, in 1964.
