The Defiant Genders Oral History Project, an initiative of Pride History Group, exists to preserve and amplify the histories of trans and gender diverse people across Australia. We are committed to addressing the gaps and distortions in historical records that have marginalised trans and gender diverse lives, particularly within progressive political and cultural movements, by ensuring our stories are recorded on our own terms. We are proudly funded by the Pride Foundation of Australia.

Through a series of oral history recordings we aim to preserve the stories of participation in creative networks, healthcare, grassroots and other alternative spaces which has rarely been formally documented. Without intentional preservation through the stories of those who were there, these histories risk disappearing altogether. Through this project we are committed to challenging this erasure by centering and documenting trans and gender diverse contributions to political and cultural life.

The project is open to any transgender or gender diverse person who has a connection to Australia

Please note: The above information will be used to ensure the project captures a diversity of lived experiences and stories. We are a small volunteer-led organisation and will endeavour to record as many stories as possible. Depending on interest in the project, we may not be able to record every interview immediately but we will maintain a register of interest and let you know if, and when, we can record your story.
